Vastu shastra basics: Vastu bring success and creates sacred space through harmony with nature.
Vastu homes, workspaces, and gardens protect and nourish, are harmonious and prosperous, and support abundance and health. They radiate a life-supporting, orderly influence into the environment. Vastu is the original green, sustainable design system. It goes beyond your footprint on the earth and actually improves the eco-system. The same laws of nature and Vastu guidelines apply to the entire planet, including the southern hemisphere.

Vastu shastra is the spiritual, scientific design system from India's Vedic tradition. Vastu creates the peace and stability we need for greater success and joy in life. Vastu is perfect for conscious lifestyles in alignment with nature. If you meditate, do yoga, eat organic food, recycle, or use anti-aging skincare, look into Vastu (and find products you'll love for sacred space and organic lifestyle at our shop online).
"Vastu" means energy or imperishable substance. "Vaastu" is the form or matter, including the space that fills it. The form and the space within the form are intimately connected and affect each other.
The Sanskrit expression, "Vastu reva vaastu," means that unbounded pure consciousness, the unmanifest source of manifestation, transforms into the material world. In other words, as Einstein said, energy becomes matter. These laws of nature, or mechanics of creation, are utilized in Vastu.
Vastu aligns homes and businesses with beneficial earth and cosmic energies and laws of nature. For best results, have a Vastu consultation from an authentic Vastu expert. Read about Vastu consultant and author Sherri Silverman, who helps clients worldwide with this grace-filled sacred and practical knowledge.
There are many names for Vastu architecture, garden, and interior design: Vastu Shastra ("shastra" means "sacred text"), Vastu Shilpa Shastra ("shilpis" are sacred sculptors), Vastu Vidya ("vidya" is "knowledge"), Vaastu, Vedic architecture, and Sthapatya Veda ("knowledge of architecture").
Vastu comes from the same tradition as yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, and Vedic astrology. Vastu is the yoga of design, bringing balance, health, harmony, inner peace, order, and unity. Meditation gives experience of pure consciousness; Vastu enhances this and connects us with the source through proper design. Ayurveda, the science of life, is knowledge for health of the body. Vastu creates healthy buildings; this profoundly affects our health, happiness, and prosperity ---- and the health of the environment. Vedic astrology or Jyotish gives knowledge of cosmic influences on our lives, emotions, relationships, prosperity, career, and health. Applying an expert Vastu consultant's recommendations and remedies helps correct negative influences in all areas of life. It also increases and creates positive effects well beyond the merely decorative.
The main blueprint for Vastu homes is a grid pattern, the Vastu Purusha Mandala. The Vastu Purusha Mandala represents the harmonious union of cosmic and earth energies, of masculine and feminine divine elements. This creates a lively, balanced wholeness. The Vastu Purusha Mandala is based on subtle mechanics of creation, the laws of nature.
Vastu recognizes five elements of creation that, when honored, enhance the flow of prana, universal life-force energy, within a building. Honoring nature is a sacred acknowledgement. Respect and care of our natural environment is a sacred contract - we have all seen the result of ignoring this.
The five elements of earth, air, fire, water, and space are energetically linked with particular directions. Earth, bhumi, is associated with the southwest; air, vayu, northwest; fire, agni, southeast; and water, jala, northeast. Space, akasha, is the expansiveness in the center of both the architectural form and each room. There are ideal placement of rooms, furniture, and other items to support such things as how well you sleep and how abundant your cash flow is.

Vastu Tips for Designing and Building Sacred Space
 |
Vaastu features: beauty, natural materials, fire in SE
|
 |
|
The first thing to look at is the land: its location, shape, slope, and other factors. An auspicious site is square or rectangular, clean of trash. If you do not have a natural stream, you can add a water feature in the northeast and get the same freshness and prosperity benefits.
The ideal shape for the mother wall of the home is square or rectangular. Properly designed extensions from the mother wall create aesthetic variety. Community sacred spaces can be square, circular, or polygonal. Each shape has an effect on the flow of energy within the space.
Ayadi gananam calculations are used to match the resonance of the inhabitants to the resonance of the structure to be built. Use of this true Vedic mathematics creates a living organism that totally supports, protects, and nourishes you. Entrust this task to an experienced Vastu consultant.
The use of natural materials enhances the health and energy of a space: tile, stone, earth or adobe, brick, bamboo, wood. Aesthetics are also a major consideration in true Vastu: the site and architecture must be pleasing and beautiful in form and effect, whether a home, garden, business, or public space. All levels should be nourished in any building, whether or not it is intended to be a sacred space: physical protection, emotional well-being, sensory satisfaction.

Create Sacred Space with Yantras
 |
 Meru Chakra, 3-dimensional Sri Yantra
|
 |
|
Yantras are beautiful art, the original Vedic sacred geometry. These cosmic diagrams generate nourishing, life-supporting energies in your home or office. Yantras are especially useful in buildings that were not Vastu-designed. They protect from negative, disruptive energies in the environment. The directions, elements, and planets exert powerful vibratory effects on our bodies, minds, and emotions. Yantras help us have support of nature rather than resistance from nature. Transcendence Design utilizes yantras and their corresponding Sanskrit mantras to become friends with the ruling planets of the directions and increase positive influences.
Order from the yantra pages: Vedic Pyramids, Gold Meru Chakra or Sri Chakra (shown here), and yantras for Mercury (Budha), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), Rahu, Ketu, Jupiter (Guru or Brihaspati), Mars (Mangal), Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Universal Protection, Sri (also spelled Shree and Shri), and Vastu Purusha Directional yantra. Our 27-page yantra book (2008 edition) gives detailed information on two- and three-dimensional yantras, their benefits, effects, mantras, and placement for creating sacred space and greater success in life.

"In 1972 I started meditating. Two years later I joined the Vedic Studies doctoral program at MERU (Maharishi European Research University, Switzerland) with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, at his suggestion. In Vedic Studies, I learned about Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and other texts, yoga, meditation, and elements of Vastu, both intellectually and experientially.
"While I was in Switzerland studying with Maharishi, a woman called Mother Olsen mentioned to me, "Angels don't like dirt!" I noticed that it was true that cleaning revs up energy in a room. Maharishi advised keeping our rooms clean and orderly to welcome the divine into the space. He said the best placement for the head of a bed is east; sleeping with your head in the north is draining and aging due to the earth's electromagnetism. This was my introduction to the knowledge of Vastu or Sthapatya Veda.
"Later I received a Ph.D. in Creativity, the Arts, and the Sacred/Application of Asian Concepts from the Union Institute, which involved sacred architecture, concentric squares, the effect of beauty, Asian art, and other elements of Vastu. My doctoral studies' approach was based on knowledge from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and India/Tantra art specialist Ajit Mookerjee.
"A friend made suggestions for improving my home, and I noticed an energy shift and greater sparkle in the air. I studied Feng Shui enough to see that Vastu is more resonant for me, due to its basis in the laws of nature and mechanics of creation, universal energies rather than anything arbitrary. I learned more Vastu from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, my spiritual teacher from the Art of Living Foundation. Since Maharishi had told me that I'd perceive errors in Vedic translations, perhaps because of increased consciousness and intuition, I began to read and research every bit of Vastu/Sthapatya Veda material that I could find.
"At their insistence, I started making Vastu recommendations to friends in 1999. They had dramatic, overnight improvements, which I took as a sign. Victoria slept better. Men starting showing up at the door for Martha the very next day. I realized they were right - I was really good at this and had innate talent plus authentic Vastu knowledge. I now do Vastu sacred space design consultations for clients in Santa Fe, the USA, and internationally.
"I began studying Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati's books in 2002; a few years later, after corresponding by email, I was fortunate to meet and study with him. I've also studied with Americans he has trained. In 2004 I studied Ayurveda and Transdermal Marma Therapy with Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra. I continue Vastu research and discuss Vastu and Jyotish with other authentic Vastu consultants and with Vedic colleagues such as David Frawley.
"Everything -- my spiritual practices, Vastu consulting, conscious natural products for organic lifestyle, and spiritually based art -- came together as Transcendence Design. My years of experience as a Vastu consultant with clients worldwide led to my book, Vastu: Transcendental Home Design in Harmony with Nature (2007, Gibbs Smith Publisher), which was recommended by the Chopra Center, designer Clodagh, and dozens of magazines and other media."
